Their cheerful optimism (or wily cunning) gives them a &ldquo;never say die&rdquo; attitude that makes them a match for creatures twice their size. They are rarely the result of loving unions, a fact which causes others to distrust and even fear them. <p>Unknown forces drove the gnomes from that realm long ago, forcing them to seek refuge in this world. Despite this, the gnomes have never completely abandoned their fey roots. They are often regarded by other peoples as strange and unpredictable; as a result, gnomes sometimes have difficulty interacting with others even though they bear no particular animosity to anyone.</p>
<p>Gnomes are small; they rarely exceed three feet tall. Their hair tends towards vibrant colors from the fiery orange of autumn leaves to the deep purple of wildflowers. They have 1 @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore05powers.JournalEntryPage.05powers00000001]{Power Point} for activating these cantrips, regained as usual (see @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore05powers.JournalEntryPage.05activation0000]{here}). Gnomes with an Arcane Background or Mystic Power add their bonus Power Point to their pool but must still learn the spells if they wish to cast them normally.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Keen Senses:</span> Gnomes start with a d6 in @Compendium[swpf-core-rules.swpf-skills.Notice]{Notice} instead of a d4. This increases their maximum Notice to d12+1.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Low Light Vision: </span>Gnome eyes amplify light. They ignore penalties for Dim and Dark @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore03rules0.JournalEntryPage.03situationalr00]{Illumination}.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Obsessive:</span> Gnomes start with a d4 in any one @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore01charac.JournalEntryPage.01traitsummari00]{Smarts}-related skill.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Reduced Pace: </span>Decrease the character&rsquo;s Pace by 1 and reduce the running die by one die type.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Size &minus;1: </span>Averaging roughly three and a half feet tall, gnomes reduce their @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore03rules0.JournalEntryPage.03situationalr00]{Size} and Toughness by 1.</li>
<li><span class="list-heading">Tough:</span> Gnomes are surprisingly hardy despite their size and strength. They start with a d6 in @UUID[Compendium.swpf-core-rules.swpf-rules.swpfcore01charac.JournalEntryPage.01traitsummari00]{Vigor} instead of a d4. This increases maximum Vigor to d12+1.</li>
